The Issue
In 2007, 3.1 million tons of electronic waste worldwide was generated and less than 14% was recycled.
Electronic devices contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium, which is why the proper handling and recycling of e-waste is essential.
In Ontario, more than 91,000 tonnes of electrical and electronics equipment require reuse and/or recycling every year.
The First Steps to Solutions
The Minister of the Environment designated a special diversion program to ensure that unwanted electronics are reused or recycled, and to stem the flow of these materials into landfill or improper processing in developing nations.
As of April 1, 2009, the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) program plan became effective under the Waste Diversion Act, 2002 (WDA), introduced by the Ontario Ministry of Environment

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GOVERNMENT APPROVED DROP & DUMP CENTRE
The Ontario Electronic Stewartship (OES) Program was developed to facilitate reuse, recycling and/or proper disposal of unwanted electronic equipment
EDI has been approved by the Ontario Government as part of the OES Initiative, and is an officia drop-site for end-of-life electronics in the area.
Reuse, Recycle or Responsible Disposal
At EDI, you can be assured that we reuse, recycle or dispose of all electronic equipment in an environmentally responsible way. We manage the following for you:
1. Reuse and Refurbishment
Our team will evaluate and assess your equipment to determine what portions can be given extended life options, to maximize your returns.
2. Secure Data Collection Management & Destruction
At EDI we ensure secure destruction services of all data prior to refurbishment and return to secondary markets for resale.
We utilize software that securely sanitizes files and documents from all laptops and computer equipment prior to refurbishment and reuse..
3. Redeployment of Resaleable Equipment
Components or refurbished units are restored and offered for resale to help offset your investment and allow you to reinvest in new equipment. By extending the life of these "good as new" refurbished units, we are keeping them out of landfills longer.
4. Recycling and End-of-Life Management
If equipment is deemed irrecoverable, EDI will either recycle components or assign End-of-Life (EOL) disposal methods that are approved by the Government of Ontario's Electronic Stewardship Program.
The Process: Recycling & End-of-Life Management
- Components are dismantled manually and mechanically, then sorted
- Reusable metals, plastics and glass are recommisioned into the market as raw materials and scrap metal
- Circuit boards are ground-up and the precious metals are extracted for reuse in other electronics
- To combat the current Green House Gas Emissions and other dangerous pollutants that are released during the mainstream incineration process, our company utilizes environmentally-friendly methods of disposing e-waste that requires no chemical leaching and no toxic burning.
